This is mostly a quiet ring. Its silver body is smooth, polished and full-bodied, moving through generous curves with very little drama. Follow the velvety curveture a little further, however, and that calm is suddenly interrupted by a concentrated pit of red. Enamel oozes across an irregular silver surface, while small fragments of metal push through from underneath. It almost feels like something geological has happened to the ring — a tiny landscape of peaks, cavities and molten-looking red. And again, moving away from it, the disturbance slowly subsides. The surface becomes quieter, the edges soften, and eventually everything returns to polished silver and velvet territory. The contrast is contained rather than spread across the piece: one intense ingredient against an otherwise restrained form. It reflects xx.y..q.ii’s approach to cocktail jewellery, informed by the designer’s background in bartending, and its ambition to reimagine cocktail jewellery. A cocktail does not need every ingredient to shout. Sometimes one element is enough to throw everything else into relief. Here, that ingredient is red.
